Cambodia and Thailand look to increase trade and investment

PHNOM PENH, 8 February 2013 (PRU) – His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An told the new Thai Ambassador to Cambodia on Friday that the bilateral relationship of the two neighbours have been enhanced over time. Both sides would like to increase their border trade and investment in various fields.

Dr. Sok An welcomed the new Ambassador Touchayoot Pakdi to Cambodia and hailed the improved bilateral ties which contribute to increasing trade along the border as well as attracting mutually beneficial investment.

“We can improve our bilateral cooperation in trade and investment”, said the Deputy Prime Minister.

The two nations have a lot of room for investment, especially in agriculture and tourism.

“We can see our trade is more active”, said Dr. Sok An.

Ambassador Touchayoot Pakdi said that he has seen more Thai business people investing in Cambodia.

“More Thai business people are planning to invest in Cambodia ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015”, said the Ambassador, referring to the economic integration of the Association of South-East Asian Nations.

Both sides also shared the view that the existing mechanisms of the General Border Committee and Joint Border Committee should continue to work on the remaining border issues.

They agreed that the Cambodia-Thai committees are paving the way for opening new border gates that will boost bilateral trade.

The two-way trade has reached more than US$3 billion.

Dr. Sok An highlighted the recent visit of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to attend the royal cremation ceremony of the late Cambodian King Father Norodom Sihanouk and during which she also met with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.

“The meeting of our two Prime Ministers was very fruitful and that will also make easier your time working in Cambodia”, Dr. Sok An said to the new Thai Ambassador. End.

Cambodia and Japan commit to preserve heritage site as oil and gas exploration begins in Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2012 – The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) agreed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An in a meeting on Monday that the historic temples of Preah Vihear province must be protected and conserved. H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, told Akira Suzuki, Executive Director and member of the Board of JOGMEC, that there are more than 200 historic sites in the province, including the Temple of Preah Vihear. Dr. Sok An said that it is very important that such cultural heritage be cared for so as to attract more tourists to the area. Already there are 2,000 tourists per day visiting Preah Vihear province. The province is also rich in mineral resources and fertile land for agriculture, he said. Cambodia and Malaysia look to further cooperation in agriculture, tourism and education sectors

PHNOM PENH, February 20, 2014 – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister shared views on Thursday that both countries can tap mutual benefits and complement each other. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin informed H.E. Sok An that, “Malaysia is good at rubber plantations, palm oil, and technology and the key is how best to work with Cambodia.” He said that Malaysian companies are interested in investing in processing rubber resin and can make good furniture from old rubber trees in Cambodia. Malaysian state run companies can also explore energy, generation, hydro-power plants and infrastructures such as roads in Cambodia. “We need feasibility studies first before the next steps can be taken.
