Press Release Planning Continues for Case 002/02 Reparation Requests


 Having successfully conducted the Stakeholders Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparation last month, the Victims Support Section (VSS) and the Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyers Section (CPLCLS) will host a Civil Parties Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparations, which will take place on 21 July 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Centre (CKCC), Royal University of Phnom Penh, Russian Federation Boulevard, Khan Toul Kork, Phnom Penh.


This event will bring Civil Party Lawyers and approximately 100 Civil Parties from throughout Cambodia to identify, discuss and develop reparation requests for the next case. For participants from the media, please note that the first and last sessions of the day are opened to the media, but that the remainder of the event will be held in closed session.


A wide variety of criminal charges will be included in this next trial, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Accordingly, the VSS and the CPLCLS are seeking to develop a diverse range of reparation requests that will address the harm suffered as a consequence of the crimes charged and bring redress to civil parties.


The VSS and the CPLCLS have been consulting with Civil Parties and Civil Party Lawyers to identify and discuss potential reparation requests for the benefit of victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.


Civil Parties can seek moral and collective reparations, but any reparation project is contingent on the conviction of the accused, who are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty through a final judgment.


The VSS is an official organ of the ECCC and is mandated to facilitate and coordinate victim participation in the ECCC proceedings. Furthermore, the VSS, in cooperation with the CPLCLS, is mandated to identify, design, and implement reparation projects; and to seek external funding and support.

Cambodia and Japan commit to preserve heritage site as oil and gas exploration begins in Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2012 – The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) agreed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An in a meeting on Monday that the historic temples of Preah Vihear province must be protected and conserved. H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, told Akira Suzuki, Executive Director and member of the Board of JOGMEC, that there are more than 200 historic sites in the province, including the Temple of Preah Vihear. Dr. Sok An said that it is very important that such cultural heritage be cared for so as to attract more tourists to the area. Already there are 2,000 tourists per day visiting Preah Vihear province. The province is also rich in mineral resources and fertile land for agriculture, he said. Cambodia and Malaysia look to further cooperation in agriculture, tourism and education sectors

PHNOM PENH, February 20, 2014  – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister shared views on Thursday that both countries can tap mutual benefits and complement each other. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin informed H.E. Sok An that, “Malaysia is good at rubber plantations, palm oil, and technology and the key is how best to work with Cambodia.” He said that Malaysian companies are interested in investing in processing rubber resin and can make good furniture from old rubber trees in Cambodia. Malaysian state run companies can also explore energy, generation, hydro-power plants and infrastructures such as roads in Cambodia. “We need feasibility studies first before the next steps can be taken.
