DPM H.E Sok An tells German parliamentarian about the achievements of ECCC and the free operation of NGOs in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Thursday 12, Jan. 2012 (PRU) – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister His Excellency Dr. Sok An on Thursday briefed Mr. Juergen Klimke, a senior Member of the German Parliament, on a number of records achieved by the Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), including its legacy, with all the Court’s records preserved in a documentation centre for the benefit of academic researchers and the Cambodian public, and setting a model of court administration for the domestic court, based on the valuable experiences from the ECCC, .

His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister thanks Germany for its significant financial and technical support to the ECCC with special focus on enhancing the victims' participation, which is unprecedented among international courts.

His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister also told German MP that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are operating freely in Cambodia, saying that “Cambodia is a heaven for NGOs” given that more than 2,800 registered NGOs are operating nationwide without restrictions.

His Excellency Dr. Sok An said that a draft law on NGOs and Associations has been drafted and legally reviewed by legal experts and Ministry of Interior, after taking into account inputs from civil society to ensure the law will benefit social development.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has close cooperation with German funded NGOs, a move that is welcomed by German lawmaker and diplomats.

Germany welcomes Cambodia’s rotating chairmanship of ASEAN for 2012, saying Cambodia is playing an important role in improving ASEAN-EU relations.

MP Klimke told Deputy Prime Minister Sok An that Cambodia is still firmly within the radar of Germany, given that Phnom Penh is still listed among the 50 development partnership countries of Germany, after Berlin reduced the number of partners from 120.

German also looks to expand bilateral cooperation, a move that would boost various sectors, including tourism.

Cambodia and Japan commit to preserve heritage site as oil and gas exploration begins in Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2012 – The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) agreed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An in a meeting on Monday that the historic temples of Preah Vihear province must be protected and conserved. H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, told Akira Suzuki, Executive Director and member of the Board of JOGMEC, that there are more than 200 historic sites in the province, including the Temple of Preah Vihear. Dr. Sok An said that it is very important that such cultural heritage be cared for so as to attract more tourists to the area. Already there are 2,000 tourists per day visiting Preah Vihear province. The province is also rich in mineral resources and fertile land for agriculture, he said. Cambodia and Malaysia look to further cooperation in agriculture, tourism and education sectors

PHNOM PENH, February 20, 2014 – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister shared views on Thursday that both countries can tap mutual benefits and complement each other. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin informed H.E. Sok An that, “Malaysia is good at rubber plantations, palm oil, and technology and the key is how best to work with Cambodia.” He said that Malaysian companies are interested in investing in processing rubber resin and can make good furniture from old rubber trees in Cambodia. Malaysian state run companies can also explore energy, generation, hydro-power plants and infrastructures such as roads in Cambodia. “We need feasibility studies first before the next steps can be taken.
