Russian Academy of Sciences looks to cooperate with Royal Academy of Cambodia for mutual interests

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 23, 2013 (PRU) – His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An on Monday welcomed an initiative by the Russian Academy of Sciences to cooperate with the Royal Academy of Cambodia in the scientific and technical field that will enhance the bilateral ties as well as to provide report of research that will be used by the concerned institutions for the benefit of the two peoples and countries.

Her Excellency Dr. Klot Thyda, President of Royal Academy of Cambodia, and Vitaly Naumkin, Director for the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) soon that will enable them to put their plan in place for promoting scientific relations through exchange of scientists to lecture and conduct joint research on cultural, political and economic topics.

They are also expected to produce joint publications of research papers so that leaders of both countries could learn on certain issues related to the ways to address problems they may occur in the future.

Naumkin said that the cooperation between the two academies will bring “fruitful benefits” to the two nations and peoples”.

Naumkin, who led the Russian delegation from the Academy, said his institute also wants to exchange view on politics, international relations, and the economic situation in Southeast Asia as “Russia wants to play a key role in Asia”.

His Excellency Dr. Sok An also sought Russia assistance in providing experts to help the International Relations Institute of Cambodia where 30 Cambodian researchers are working. He also looks to send Cambodians to be trained by the Russian academy.

In response, Naumkin said that “we can do so since we live in the world of information and we can create friendship.”

Cambodia is also seeking more foreign direct investment (FDI), including Russia, to invest in the kingdom.

Two-way trade between Cambodia and Russia is in the range of U.S. $52 million. End.

Cambodia and Japan commit to preserve heritage site as oil and gas exploration begins in Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2012 – The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) agreed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An in a meeting on Monday that the historic temples of Preah Vihear province must be protected and conserved. H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, told Akira Suzuki, Executive Director and member of the Board of JOGMEC, that there are more than 200 historic sites in the province, including the Temple of Preah Vihear. Dr. Sok An said that it is very important that such cultural heritage be cared for so as to attract more tourists to the area. Already there are 2,000 tourists per day visiting Preah Vihear province. The province is also rich in mineral resources and fertile land for agriculture, he said. Cambodia and Malaysia look to further cooperation in agriculture, tourism and education sectors

PHNOM PENH, February 20, 2014 – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister shared views on Thursday that both countries can tap mutual benefits and complement each other. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin informed H.E. Sok An that, “Malaysia is good at rubber plantations, palm oil, and technology and the key is how best to work with Cambodia.” He said that Malaysian companies are interested in investing in processing rubber resin and can make good furniture from old rubber trees in Cambodia. Malaysian state run companies can also explore energy, generation, hydro-power plants and infrastructures such as roads in Cambodia. “We need feasibility studies first before the next steps can be taken.
