Cambodia’s Deputy
Prime Minister Dr. Sok An said on Wednesday at the ceremony for the coming into
effect of the civil code that it will provide the legal basis for harmonising
the daily activities of people and also serve social justice.
Dr. Sok An, who is also Minister in Charge of the
Office of the Council of Ministers, said that the civil code will also play a
key role in improving the investment climate, trade and economic activity in
Cambodia.
Cambodia is also looking to establish a commercial
court or chamber in the future to resolve
commercial disputes that might occur in the future as the country’s
economic development picks up speed, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
“This civil code will improve justice for the people
as well as ensuring social development”, the Deputy Prime Minister told the
meeting, attended by top government officials along with Minister of Justice
Ang Vong Vathana, the Japanese Ambassador and Japanese legal experts and
students.
H.E. Dr. Sok An regarded the launching of the civil
code today as “a milestone in the judicial system of the Kingdom”.
“It is another milestone in building a legal framework
for the Kingdom of Cambodia, which shows the good will of the Royal Government
in building and strengthening the rule of law under the wise leadership of
Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of
Cambodia.”
The Deputy Prime Minister thanked and highly appreciated
the efforts of the leader of the Ministry of Justice, legal experts and other
institutions involved in drafting the civil code in cooperation with the Japan
International Cooperation Agency.
The civil code consists of 1305 articles.
