COMMENTARY: Thai Rath’s Slash-and-Burn Desire

Despite numerous efforts made by the Cambodian authorities to bring clarifications rejecting the “yellow shirt” people and a number of unprofessional and politically motivated Thai media outlets’ allegations detrimental to the good relations between the governments and the peoples of the two countries, Thai Rath’s editorial on 19 December 2011 “The Fragile Relations” has once again attempted to drive a wedge and cause mistrust among the two neighbors.

Thai Rath’s editorialist has referred to baseless and speculative information linking the “Sukhumvit 77’s grenade plot” to Cambodia saying that the perpetrators were trained in Cambodia. Thai Rath should know that to set grenade traps Thais do not need to learn from Cambodians. Thai Rath should know also that Cambodian leaders and authorities adhere fully to the rule of international law on terrorism and had never ever harbored Thai terrorists or terrorists of any other nationality. Cambodia has an internationally acclaimed reputation to fully cooperate with international organization for the tracking and apprehension of “wanted terrorists”.

Thai Rath’s editorialist must stay out of speculating about the “helicopter incident” in the border area of Koh Kong (Cambodia) and Trat-Chanburi (Thailand) and leave the matter to the military and civilian authorities of both countries to sort thing out first. It would be fair to Thai Rath’s readers, had Thai Rath’s editorialist spreads out its opinion based solely on true and factual information. Misinformation and fabricated information for the purpose of slash-and-burn could lead to disaster.

Does Thai Rath know that Cambodia want to live in peace and in good neighborliness with Thailand, and both country must strive to become honest and respectable partners for development for generations to come?

Cambodia and Japan commit to preserve heritage site as oil and gas exploration begins in Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 30, 2012 – The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) agreed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An in a meeting on Monday that the historic temples of Preah Vihear province must be protected and conserved. H.E. Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, told Akira Suzuki, Executive Director and member of the Board of JOGMEC, that there are more than 200 historic sites in the province, including the Temple of Preah Vihear. Dr. Sok An said that it is very important that such cultural heritage be cared for so as to attract more tourists to the area. Already there are 2,000 tourists per day visiting Preah Vihear province. The province is also rich in mineral resources and fertile land for agriculture, he said. Cambodia and Malaysia look to further cooperation in agriculture, tourism and education sectors

PHNOM PENH, February 20, 2014 – Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister shared views on Thursday that both countries can tap mutual benefits and complement each other. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Tan Sri Muhyiddin informed H.E. Sok An that, “Malaysia is good at rubber plantations, palm oil, and technology and the key is how best to work with Cambodia.” He said that Malaysian companies are interested in investing in processing rubber resin and can make good furniture from old rubber trees in Cambodia. Malaysian state run companies can also explore energy, generation, hydro-power plants and infrastructures such as roads in Cambodia. “We need feasibility studies first before the next steps can be taken.
